On Saturday last, Mindful Medicine Worldwide sponsored a one day acupuncture workshop, with Bob as the teacher and held here in Boudha at the White Monastery in one of the classrooms for students here to learn Buddhist philosophy during the weekdays. While Bob has not taught acupuncture specifically for many years, these students were mostly beginners and Bob's presentation and tone were perfect. I have to say I will miss going to Bob's classes, which I've had the opportunity and privilege to attend perhaps 30 or 40 weekends over the years. Miriam Lee taught me to be an acupuncturist, but Bob taught me to think like a doctor.

Anyway, there were four Tibetan monks, three Tibetan nuns, three different Nepali/Tibetan translators (all of whom want to learn acupuncture), and three American volunteers working at one of the other clinics in the outskirts of town. So many levels of knowledge and understanding is truly a challenge, but that's what one gets in these situations and Bob handled it, I thought, with aplomb. He gave something useful to everyone.

It was great to see some of the local people wanting to learn this medicine. My personal opinion is that we need to be teacher volunteers, so that the local people wherever we go can become self-sufficient instead of needing us to travel half way round the world to work in clinics hither and yon. There is one small acupuncture program here in Kathmandu, and it takes three years part time to complete...no herbal training. It is quite cheap and Anthony Giovanelli of Acupuncture Ambassadors recently taught a seminar there. For this medicine to flourish worldwide, the local people need to be full participants.

Then there was the room we used...at Chokyi Nyima's monastery. It was a lovely room with nice light and windows, and in the afternoon the sounds of a full-on Buddhist puja...chanting with drums and gyalings and cymbals, etc. These punctuated Bob's presentation on using Miriam Lee's Great Ten Needles as a Modular treatment protocol adding and subtracting points for different patterns of different diseases. As I said in my first blog, this ain't Kansas, but it has its own unmistakable flavor and I'm glad to be here.

Next Blog...my last from Nepal: What type of conditions are we treating here in Kathmandu?

manoj khandelwalLooking for acupuncturist for conducting biggest treatment camp

There is a wellness revolution taking place relating to the healing of the body as well as the mind. To add substance to this revolution, well known Journalist Mr. Manoj Khandelwal has decided to bring the 3000-year old traditional acupuncture healing system and the 21st century’s ultra modern medicine together for the betterment of the natives of the North-East India. In other words, the age-old healing techniques and modern science will go hand-in-hand to bring about dramatic results in patients, which would be hard to believe.

Did you know that North-east India has the highest number of cancer patients in India! 2, 00, 000 cancer patients register themselves in hospitals located out of state annually! And this place still does not have any exclusive recovery centre for paralysis, stroke, accident or trauma for proper recovery program where app. 6,000 people getting stroke annually! Furthermore, out of every 1000 people here, 75 suffer from mental disorders. Have higher no. of Asthma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, pain disorder and Gastroenterological - Liver disease patient.

This would be made possible by Mr. Khandelwal, who will bring together, for the first time, in the history of healthcare, the countries top-rated physicians as well as surgeons and reputed Acupuncturists from around the world under one umbrella. The Indian doctors will be from country’s multispecialty hospitals and the Acupuncturists/Acupressurist would be coming from top-notch institutes of the world. They all will come under one roof at Guwahati to conduct a free treatment camp.

This treatment camp is being taken up as a Social Responsibility Program and patients from all seven states of north-east India -- Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura & Arunachal Pradesh -- will be treated here ‘free of cost’ through acupuncture and modern medicine at an Integrated Medical Centre that will be set-up at Guwahati.

The integrated medical center will be divided into two sections – the Wellness Centre and the Treatment Center. The Wellness Centre will be the place where practitioners will do a check-up of patients in an air-conditioned environment, while the Treatment Centre will have 15 beds with nurses.

The goal will be to offer effective care to around 20,000-40,000 treatments at the Guwahati (Assam) clinic through traditional Acupuncture, Acupressure, Reflexology and modern medicine. The duration of the project is six months.

To bring this programme into reality, we appeal all Acupuncturists/Acupressurist and holistic therapists -- from all fields -- to come forward and put in their efforts in this ‘no profit project’. You may volunteer your time from 7 days every month or once in a month to whole 6 months as per your choice, it’s up to you. Other healing professionals and body-workers can also step forward to offer their skills and services for this noble cause. This project will help them in gaining hands-on experience and sharing their expertise with other specialists.

The doctors coming forward for this project will be provided the best of accommodation near the camp. Food and other requirements will also be taken care of. Foreign Acupuncturists will be provided accommodation with a modern kitchen for their own cooking, a dining room along with a helper. Medical interpreters will also be provided to help foreign acupuncturists in interacting with patients. Feel free, if you need any other facilities.

The idea behind the project is to travel, teach and treat with Acupuncture, in areas of India, where healthcare is minimal or non-existent. The project is scheduled to take-off from 11th January, 2011.Mr. Khandelwal’s credentials as a trained journalist will also help in getting extensive coverage for the project, both in print media as well as in electronic media.

Along with this, Mr. Khandelwal, has also drawn a blue-print for a new concept called ‘Media Medicine’, which will be projected as ‘’innertainment’’-- that is entertainment from within, through better healing, hope, health and happiness. This programme will be based on the ‘acupuncture project’ and will be aired on a leading TV channel from the region.

It is an opportunity for people who want to volunteer their medical skills overseas in underdeveloped countries, in farthest border and neglected areas of India which is home to many tribes.

I also look forward to proposals from acupuncturist/ institutions/clinic who are willing to establish joint venture Acupuncture/Acupressure treatment centers in North Eastern India. Acupuncture institution or senior Acupuncturist can use our centre as internship/externship facility centre. Come, be a part of something very noble…. The greatest gift any of us can ever give ……..

Please come forward. We need your help.
