Honora Lee Wolfe, Dipl. Ac., was born in Dayton, OH in 1948 where she attended Fairmont East High School. In 1966, Honora went to Syracuse University in order to study art. In 1967, she transferred to Ohio State University. In 1968, she went to the University of Louvain in Belgium to study art history for a year. When she came back to the United States, she continued her pursuit of an art history degree at O.S.U. but later switched to sociology. Upon graduating from college, Honora accepted a job at a newspaper in New Mexico. However, on her way there, she fell in love with Boulder, CO and decided to stay.
Once in Boulder, Honora found jobs as a graphic artist and copywriter for the following journals and magazines: Town & Country Review, Boulder Magazine, and Straight Creek Journal. She also became involved in the Boulder Community Free School. In the mid-70s, she became interested in massage. However, massage schools were few and far between and there wasn't any in the Boulder-Denver area. Therefore, Honora gathered together a faculty and opened the Boulder School of Massage Therapy, which she directed for the first five years of its existence.
In 1979, Honora married Bob Flaws. In 1981, she left BSMT in order to travel with Bob on a national teaching tour. In 1982, she became a mother to her son, Ian. For the next several years, Honora approached being a mother as her full-time career, but by the mid-80s, Ian was grown enough that it was time for her to go back to work. Since 1982, Honora had been helping Bob with the design and production of Blue Poppy Press books, having also coauthored Prince Wen Hui's Cook with Bob in 1983.
In 1985, 86, and 87, Honora went to the Shanghai College of Chinese Medicine in order to study tui na. She became the student and protégé of Dr. Liu, and specialized in the rolling school method and yi zhi chan fa, the one finger Zen method.
Some time around 1986, Bob and Honora opened a very small acupuncture-Chinese medicine school, the Dechen Yonten Dzo Institute of Buddhist Medicine. Honora taught tui na at this school and attended classes. She graduated as an acupuncturist in 1988. Honora also studied acupuncture with Dr. Eric Tao (Xi-yu) of Denver and received a certificate in acupuncture-moxibustion from him. From that time onward, Honora has divided her professional life between practicing acupuncture and being the general manager of Blue Poppy Press, now a division of Blue Poppy Enterprises, Inc. In her private practice, she combines acupuncture and moxibustion with tui na and specializes in musculoskeletal and nervous system pain and sports medicine.
Honora is also the author of a number of books and articles on acupuncture and Chinese medicine. These include Highlights of Ancient Acupuncture Prescriptions; The Breast Connection; Second Spring; Better Breast Health Naturally; Managing Menopause Naturally with Chinese Medicine; and Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Birth.
Honora's other credits include teaching at various acupuncture colleges around the US and at acupuncture conferences in Europe and the US as well as publishing articles in a variety of acupuncture newsletters and journals.
Honora hobbies include skiing, gardening, reading historical fiction, weight lifting and cycling.
