Blue Poppy Book Review
The Heart & Essence of Dan'xi's Methods of Treatment
Zhu Dan-xi was the greatest of the four great master physicians of the Jin
and Yuan dynasties, in no small part because his differentiation and
treatment of "miscellaneous diseases" was definitive, and still serves as
the cornerstone of latter-day traditional Chinese internal medicine.
His Zhi Fa Xin Yao, translated here by Yang Shou-zhong and Bob Flaws,
systematically describes the common patterns and treatment of dozens of
internal diseases, named according to traditional Chinese disease diagnosis.
This method of organization makes obvious the traditional method of dual
diagnosis, i.e. pairing pattern identification with known outward
manifestations of disease, a critical feature of Chinese medicine which has
not received enough attention in most western Chinese medicine colleges.
While there are more modern books dealing in this subject, none have been
published in English, and since so much of Dan-xi's work is as fresh today
as it was hundreds of years ago, this book should serve as a fine
introduction to dual diagnosis. It also has great practical value, as many
of the syndromes Dan-xi described are still commonly encountered today, and
his treatment methods are still quite effective.
