Blue Poppy Book Review
The Essence of Liu Feng-wu's Gynecology
Liu Feng-wu was one of the 20th century's most accomplished practitioners of
Chinese medicine, particularly in the field of women's medicine. The Essence
of Liu Feng-wu's Gynecology is a collection of his essays and case studies
compiled by his students. This slim volume contains some of the most
incisive discussion of Chinese medical theory and practice yet published in
English. Liu's essay on the role of the Spleen and Stomach in the qi dynamic
is amazingly detailed, yet clear. Other essays explain in depth the clinical
ramifications of such adages as "the Liver is the thief of the organs," and
"the Penetrating and Conception vessels cannot move by themselves." He
discusses the various methods of treatment for Blood-aspect patterns. The
essay, "Knowledge based on experience in the clinical application of
Bupleurum" is far deeper than its cumbersome title would suggest; in fact,
it is a fascinating discussion of six-channels and zang-fu theory, with a
focus on chai hu (Bupleurum) and its actions in all the standard formulas
that treat cold damage, Liver depression/stagnation patterns, and
Liver/Spleen patterns, both in general and as they pertain to women's
medicine. It should be clear by now that this book will be of great interest
to all practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine.
With respect to gynecology, the case studies, the inclusion of Liu's
experiential prescriptions, and his surpassingly thorough treatment of
relevant theory make this essential reading for any practitioner working
with women's health.
